GATE Full Form is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination in India that tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. It is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.

GATE is open to all candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture (4 years after 10+2) and those in the final year of such programs. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Science (Post-Diploma/4 years after 10+2) and those in the final year of such programs are also eligible to take the GATE exam.

The GATE exam consists of a single paper of a 3-hour duration that contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. The paper is divided into two sections: General Aptitude (GA) and Engineering Mathematics and subject-specific sections. The GA section consists of 10 questions carrying a total of 15 marks, while the Engineering Mathematics and subject-specific sections consist of 55 questions carrying a total of 85 marks.

The questions in the paper are of multiple choice and numerical answer types. The multiple choice questions carry 1 or 2 marks each, while the numerical answer type questions carry 1 or 2 marks each.

GATE scores are valid for three years from the date of announcement of the results. The scores are used for admissions to postgraduate programs (e.g., M.E., M.Tech, direct Ph.D.) in Indian institutes of higher education with financial assistance provided by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and other government agencies.

GATE scores are also used by public sector enterprises such as Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), and National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) for employment.

The GATE examination is conducted online and is held once a year, usually in the first or second week of February. The examination is conducted in two sessions on a single day. The results are usually declared on the official website of GATE within a month after the examination.
